BT seeks 600 new recruits across the UK

BT plans to recruit more than 600 apprentices and graduates later this year.

Positions will be in engineering, customer service, applied research and cyber security.

The recruits will also support the company’s plans to build and extend its 5G network around the UK.

The new roles are spread across locations including Dundee, Glasgow, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Ipswich, London and Manchester.

The telecommunications group is one of the UK’s largest private sector apprenticeship employers and has recruited more than 2,000 apprentices and graduates over the past three years.

Debbie White, chief human resources officer at BT Group, said: “Despite the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve continued to recruit and attract brilliant people into our business.

“The combination of our hybrid working approach and our state-of-the-art offices makes BT a great place for new joiners to learn new skills and capabilities, collaborate with colleagues and bring innovative thinking to drive growth across our business and deliver for all of our customers. It’s a very exciting time to join BT.”

Separately, eight more Scottish locations are set to get a broadband boost after a £16.2m investment by Openreach.

Another 54,000 homes and businesses are included in the latest full fibre upgrade, with the new network to be built to the majority of premises in Stirling and Bridge of Allan; Kirkcaldy, Dysart and North Glenrothes in Fife; Carnoustie and Monifieth in Angus; and Gourock in Inverclyde.

This follows plans announced last year for nearly a million more Scottish homes and businesses to be given access to Openreach’s new gigabit-capable network, including 300,000 in rural and harder-to-serve areas.

The build has now passed more than 530,000 properties across Scotland, including 20,000 business premises, in places like Aviemore, Aberdeen and Ardrossan.

Openreach’s partnership director for Scotland Robert Thorburn said: “We’re reaching more communities than ever and our highly-skilled engineers, alongside our build partners, are working hard to deliver some of the fastest and most reliable broadband available anywhere in Europe.

“In 2021 our engineers built around 770 metres of new broadband cables every minute – making ultrafast broadband available to another home every 13 seconds.”
