BT customers locked out of email accounts as company works to 'establish' ongoing problem

People have been taking to social media with reports that BT Mail is down having been hit by an outage.

According to DownDetector, several users reported issues with the service at around 6.30am this morning with more people then reporting issues at around 8am.

Users are said to be seeing an error message with many unable to log in and some being blocked for accessing their accounts.

The outage appears to be ongoing. One person said that it looked as if the company was having a "mare this morning" with "issues across Internet/Portal Services."

There are several comments already left on DownDetector - a website which shows reports submitted in the past 24 hours - compared to the typical volume of reports by time of day.

Breaking down the type of reports, they say that 58 per cent of the issues involve email whilst 40 per cent involve the internet compared to phone issues which currently make up three per cent of reported issues.

Writing on the website one said: "Won't accept log in and now has blocked me for 20 minutes."

Another added: "Had no fibre broadband since Friday night, can't even log into my account today, having to rely on a hybrid connect device where we don't have a 5g signal."

"Yet again no email" wrote a third.

The firm has since acknowledged the problem on the BT Mail login page saying: "We've had reports of a problem access BT Mail via webmail. If you can't access your email account via webmail, please use an Email client.

"We are working to establish what's wrong and will provide updates soon. Sorry if you're affected."
