Bryson DeChambeau won the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot using a Cobra driver, and if you go to the company’s website, his image is currently positioned between photos of Rickie Fowler and Lexi Thompson, and close to Gary Woodland. Those are Cobra’s marquee brand ambassadors.
However, on Thursday at the Asian Tour’s PIF Saudi International in King Abdullah Economic City in Saudi Arabia, DeChambeau was not using a new Cobra Aerojet driver, one of last season’s LTDx drivers or a Radspeed driver from two season’s ago. Instead, DeChambeau used a TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus+.
DeChambeau is one of the fastest swingers in golf, having hit drives over 400 yards in long drive competitions and bombing the ball 377 yards over a lake on the par-5 sixth hole at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in 2021. Fitting someone who swings that hard into a driver is challenging, and DeChambeau has expressed dissatisfaction with his drivers in the past, including saying at the 2021 British Open, “The driver sucks. It’s not a good face for me, and we’re still trying to figure out how to make it good on the mis-hits. I’m living on the razor’s edge, like I’ve told people for a long time.”
It’s also worth noting that DeChambeau’s TaylorMade driver in Saudi Arabia is fitted with a Project X T1100 shaft, even though he has a relationship with LA Golf that includes a signature line of shafts. The Project X T1100 is counterbalanced and ideal for hard-swinging players who need to drastically decrease spin.
