Bryson DeChambeau ignores doctor’s advice to take “huge risk” at The Masters

Bryson DeChambeau has ignored the advice of his doctor and is taking a ‘huge risk’ in order to compete at this week’s Masters tournament. DeChambeau’s start to 2022 has been a sporadic one due to ongoing injury problems.

But the big-hitting American is back in action at Augusta National this week for the first major of the season. His return to the Masters is a risky one though, with the 2020 US Open champion still said to be recovering from a bone fracture.

As a result, DeChambeau admitted that he has headed into this week’s event against the advice of his doctor and coach. He said: “Normally a bone fracture takes four months to probably fully heal, I’m back here in two.

“The doctors recommended that I don’t come back for a while. And even [coach] Chris [Como] has told me ‘you probably shouldn’t play’, even though he wants me to play obviously. But it was a huge risk a couple weeks ago. It was probably not one that my doctors recommended, but I’m like, ‘man, this only comes around once a year and I’ve got to give this a go’.”

DeChambeau revealed his injuries stem from his hip and his hand, with the former problem occurring two years ago, and the latter more recently while out in Saudi Arabia in February. Speaking about his injuries, the American believes he could have been more cautious in looking after them.

He added: “One of the things I didn’t do is take care of my hands and my hip like I should have and I went pretty hard. Albeit I wouldn’t do anything else to change what happened because it’s made me a better person because of it, taking six weeks off, realising that golf isn’t everything in life.”

Despite being absent from the PGA Tour, DeChambeau believes his break from golf has been important for him, and has allowed him to do ‘some pretty cool things’ during his time off. He said: “I’ve had a lot of things change behind the scenes, which has been awesome for me.

“It allowed me to do some pretty cool things on YouTube and hopefully create an audience that can see what’s going on in my life and see what I want to do to give back to the game of golf as much as I can.”

The American will tee it up alongside the rest of the field, when the Masters kicks off this Thursday.
