Uncapped seamer John Turner has been ruled out of a possible England debut next week after suffering a side injury.
The 22-year-old had been called up to England’s T20 squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand but has now been replaced by Durham quick Brydon Carse.
Turner has impressed selectors with his 90mph pace this summer and was set to be fast-tracked into the England set-up a little more than two months after playing the first senior T20 of his career for Hampshire against Middlesex in the Vitality Blast.
That plan is now on hold, however, after he picked up the side problem on Hundred duty with Trent Rockets.
Carse is also highly-rated by England and already has nine ODI caps to his name, though he it yet to make his T20I bow.
The Durham quick was touted as a possible Ashes bolter at the start of the summer but picked up a side strain of his own that ruled him out of the first part of the season.
Ahead of the autumn’s World Cup defence, England’s focus is on the four-match ODI series against New Zealand that follows the run of four T20s, with the squad for the shorter format given an experimental feel.
As well as Carse, Worcestershire seamer Josh Tongue could make his T20 debut when the series gets underway at Durham next Wednesday, while Surrey’s Gus Atkinson - another 90mph quick accelerated into the mix - could make win his first cap in any format, having already been named in England’s likely World Cup squad.
