Ever since stepping foot into Spartanburg, Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has maintained that his goal is to get better every day. But that may not have been the case this morning.
The rookie and the rest of the Carolina offense had a bit of a rough go during Thursday’s installment of training camp. Young, in particular, threw his first interception of the summer—one head coach Frank Reich chalked up as a crossing of wires.
“Yeah, miscommunication on a stick route as far as turning out versus running out,” Reich confirmed after practice. “So, normal stuff. I mean, you don’t like it, but we’ll get it cleaned it up.”
In addition to the pick—which landed into the hands of cornerback CJ Henderson—Young also notched a few incompletions, ate a sack and fumbled an exchange with running Miles Sanders. Fellow quarterback Andy Dalton also hit the turnover column, tossing his second interception of camp to linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill.
Nonetheless, this is the time to get those errors out.
“We’re gonna make mistakes,” Reich said. “I thought today, the first half of the practice—this is without watching the tape—felt crisp and sharp on both sides of the ball. On all three phases, really. Special teams as well. And then about halfway through practice, at least on offense—where my eyes were a little bit more—just felt like a little bit of a lull. A few too many turnovers and mistakes. But you learn from those and you gotta bounce back.”
