Bryce Young was officially named the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback after the very first practice of his very first NFL training camp. But that won’t change his approach.
The 2023 No. 1 overall pick spoke with reporters following Wednesday’s opening outing in Spartanburg, S.C. When asked about being handed the reins by head coach Frank Reich just moments prior, Young stayed true to his unflappable form.
“That means a lot. That’s a huge blessing,” he said. “I always trust the coaches and I wanna do everything I can to play whatever role it is I’m called on to help the team. So that means a lot.
“For me, it doesn’t change my approach. Make sure that I take things day by day. There’s a lot I want to keep growing in, keep improving in, a lot to learn. And we’re all in it as a team, in this together.”
In a precursor to the announcement, Young was the first quarterback to take a snap in team drills for Carolina this morning. He responded with a relatively solid performance, one he wants to keep building on.
“I think there’s ups and downs in every practice,” he stated. “I think just the more reps that I’m able to get, we’re all able to get, the new guys—you just start to feel more comfortable. And really, that credit goes to my teammates and coaches of making me feel welcome, getting me prepared in the meeting rooms. And just the more reps you get, you get more comfortable in the offense.”
Well, those reps are certainly coming.
