Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young learned a lot of hard lessons in his first NFL season.
That rough rookie campaign came to an end on Sunday, after his team was shut out by the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Young, who completed 11 of his 18 throws for just 94 yards in the 9-0 loss, was asked what he’s learned in 2023.
“Obviously, just dealing with adversity,” he said. “You’re not entitled to anything. You’re not entitled to any sort of success. And just that you gotta keep showing up, keep making sure that you’re pushing yourself. You can’t lean on success to be your motivator. You have to be internally motivated and that’s something that got put to the test throughout the year.”
The year saw Young lead the 2-15 Panthers with some uninspiring stats. The No. 1 overall pick now closes up his season having averaged 179.8 passing yards per contest with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Young, who also absorbed a franchise-record 62 sacks, was then asked if he’s planning on taking a bit of a step back to start his first full NFL offseason.
“Probably,” he replied. “Full transparency—haven’t mapped out exactly what it’s gonna look like, what it’s gonna be. But, yeah, just talking to the vets around here, people who have been there—everyone said, obviously, just take some time, take a step back.”
