Brute forced off train at Paisley Gilmour Street after intimidating female passenger

A drunk thug had to be put off a train at Paisley Gilmour Street after intimidating a female passenger.

Barry McConnell, 34, spent the day drinking with workmates when he intimidated a female passenger on board a train from Glasgow.

Appearing at Paisley Sheriff Court, McConnell pleaded guilty ahead of his trial to causing fear or alarm on December 6, 2018, on a train journey between Glasgow Central Station and Paisley Gilmour Street Station in that he did act in an aggressive manner, repeatedly shout, swear and make threats of violence.

Procurator fiscal depute Maureen McGovern told the court: “Around 4.14pm the accused was a party of three males and they were on a train from Glasgow to Ardrossan.

“People were avoiding the accused and his friends due to their intoxicated behaviour.

“The accused was loud and shouting ‘F**k you.’

“A female boarded the train and the accused was sitting across the aisle and wouldn’t let the woman past and was being intimidatory towards her. Other people got involved to look out and protect the female.

“The accused stated ‘Who the f**k do you think you are you f*****g cow? Bring your husband back here and I’ll do him as well.’

“The ticket collector became aware of the accused and his intoxicated friends. He asked for their tickets and asked where they were going and they replied Glasgow.

“The conductor explained the train had left Glasgow and was going to Ayr.

“The accused began shouting and swearing, adamant they were on a train to Glasgow.

“Due to their conduct, they were asked to get off the train at Paisley Gilmour Street and police were contacted by passengers.

“Police boarded the train and the accused was pointed out to them. His belligerent manner continued and he wasn’t formally cautioned and charged.”

McConnell’s defence agent told the court that he had been out with friends that day.

She explained: “This incident was three and a half years ago and nothing else has come before the court.

“This was a work event and far too much alcohol had been taken.

“This is a man with an extremely hard work ethic and has three children to support.”

Sheriff Simon Fraser fined McConnell of Brewlands Drive, in Symington, £400 calling his behaviour “entirely loutish and intimidating.”

McConnell was ordered to pay the fine in full within 28 days or he would be imprisoned for the equivalent.
