Brute attacked man with learning difficulties after hearing he 'hit a child' in a Lanarkshire park

A Blantyre man lashed out after hearing that a young boy had been hit by an adult.

Alexander McSkimming went to a skatepark and confronted the 24-year-old man, who has learning difficulties.

He then punched him twice on the face.

McSkimming, 40, of Calder Street, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted assaulting his victim to his injury and permanent disfigurement at Stonefield Park, Blantyre, on September 19, 2020.

Chloe O'Hara, prosecuting, said there was an "incident" involving the boy and the adult victim at the skatepark facility.

This was reported to McSkimming who went to the park about 6.30pm and accused the man of hitting the youngster.

The man sustained a cut to his cheek when McSkimming punched him, knocking him to the ground.

He was taken to Hairmyres Hospital where the wound was cleaned and glued. He now has a scar.

The assault was captured in part by CCTV and McSkimming was arrested.

Defence agent Andy Iles said his client was unaware the victim has learning difficulties. He simply reacted on hearing the boy's claim that he had been assaulted by an adult.

Sheriff Thomas Millar noted that McSkimming has previous convictions but not for assault.

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports.
