Brutal Lionel Messi chant takes over Qatar after Argentina's defeat to Saudi Arabia

World Cup fans have been bonding over a ruthless Lionel Messi chant in the wake of Argentina's shock defeat to Saudi Arabia.

Messi's side succumbed to one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history when they went down 2-1 to the Saudis at the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday.

The Argentina captain had given his side the lead with a 10th minute penalty, before the South Americans remarkably saw three goals disallowed in the first half.

Saudi Arabia then came roaring back with two goals in the opening eight minutes of the second half, with first Saleh Al Shehri firing in a low effort and then Salem Al Dawsari scoring a superb shot from range.

With Messi stunned, Argentina were unable to get back into the game, and one of the favourites for the tournament now see their hopes of reaching the last-16 in real danger.

Speaking after the match, Messi said: "In five minutes of errors we lost the lead and found ourselves 1-2 down. We messed up, we threw crosses into the box and the game became a little complicated."

On the three offside goals, one of which he scored himself, he added: "I saw that the offsides were very fair. I didn't see them through images, but if they were annulled, they would be the right decisions. There is no excuse."

Messi continued: "We knew that it was a team that if we let them [Saudi Arabia] play, they played well and that they pushed us a lot with their high (defensive) line.

"I had never suffered such a hard blow with this group of players. Things happen for a reason. Now, obviously, we have to win or win (to get through the group)."

The defeat was met with dismay from the scores of Argentina fans in Qatar, while the jubilant Saudi supporters spilled out onto the streets and celebrated in the Lusail Boulevard opposite the stadium.

And as fans from all countries continue to mingle in Qatar, the misery suffered by Messi has become something to bond over.

Fans on the Metro heading to the Al Janoub Stadium for the clash between France and Australia broke out into song mocking Messi, with the 'Bella Ciao' song made famous by the Netflix series Money Heist adapted to become simply 'Messi Ciao'.

Unsurprisingly it is fans of Argentina's rivals Brazil who are leading the chant, but supporters of plenty of other countries have been joining in, with fans on the buses from the Al Wakra station to the Al Janoub stadium all singing it and bonding over the tune.

Argentina now sit bottom of Group C following the loss, with Mexico drawing 0-0 with Poland in Tuesday's other game in the group.
