Bruno Guimaraes has confessed that he harbours ambitions to win the Champions League with Newcastle United. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, the Magpies’ £33million man admitted he wants to win Europe’s elite competition on Tyneside, while insisting the club are ‘keen’ to secure the Premier League title as well.
Guimaraes has been adapting to life in the north-east since his big-money move in January, with Howe easing the Brazilian into the hostilities of English football. He stole the show in his first start for Newcastle as his breathtaking backheel finish clinched a 2-1 victory against Southampton.
The 24-year-old acknowledged the physicality of English football but insists he will not be fazed on his mission to achieve Champions League glory with the Magpies.
"If a club has a project and wants to aspire to the maximum, then it's going to involve winning the Champions League,” he said. "It's the biggest club competition in the world and obviously we're keen on winning the Premier League as well.
“The Premier League is fast and intense. Its physicality is similar to France but the Premier League is definitely faster but the best way to learn is by practising so when I play, I'll be able to learn quickly."
Guimaraes also revealed how he spoke with other clubs - namely Arsenal - but opted to join the Saudi-backed revolution at St James’ Park due to the long-term project of the owners. An emotional embrace with Newcastle supporters after the win at Southampton was his first real taste of the feel-good factor emanating from the terraces.
"I did speak to some other clubs,” he added. "But the only concrete offer came in from Newcastle and I really wanted to come here. I've always wanted to play in the Premier League and on top of that it was the start of a new sporting project for the club."
