BBC pundit Garth Crooks has named Bruno Guimaraes in his Premier League team of the week. Newcastle United’s match-winner stole the show at St James’ Park as his two goals secured a dramatic comeback victory.
The Brazilian is quickly becoming a fan favourite on Tyneside after his £40million arrival from Lyon. Last week, in his first home start, Guimaraes put in a man-of-the-match performance as Newcastle eked out a 1-0 win against Wolves. He followed that up in style against Leicester with a brace - including a 95th-minute winner that will live long in the memory of Toon supporters.
His inclusion in Crooks’ team sees him feature alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Mason Mount and Sadio Mane. In his BBC column, the former Tottenham Hotspur striker also praised the Magpies’ owners for their efforts since buying the club.
“What a result this was for Newcastle against Leicester,” he wrote. “The game was going nowhere until Guimaraes refused to give up on a lost cause for his first goal then sprinted 40 yards to get in the box, when the game looked over, for his second.
“Leicester looked leggy and lacklustre, probably due to their superb midweek victory in Europe. However, they will need to learn how to come back to their domestic programme and be in a position to churn out a draw when not firing on all cylinders.
“Newcastle's new owners, meanwhile, need to be congratulated for taking over the club at a difficult time. They have provided stability and been conservative in the transfer market. I don't know who is advising them, but they are doing one helluva job.”
