Bruno Guimaraes makes promise to 'unbelievable' Newcastle United fans after Man City defeat

Bruno Guimaraes made a promise to fans that the club would change next season after a chastening 5-0 loss to Manchester City. Newcastle United were beaten by league leaders Manchester City at the Etihad stadium with Pep Guardiola's side running out 5-0 winners.

Two late goals rubbed salt into the Magpies' wounds, with the only positives being the return of Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier as second-half substitutes. Wilson had a chance to reduce the arrears but saw his effort well saved by Ederson in the home goal. Brazilian Guimaraes played the full match – displaying his new hair colour for the first time – and he put in a decent performance. However, afterwards he felt compelled to send a message to fans.

He tweeted: "Fans, you don't deserve what happened today. Your love for our team is unbelievable. I promise you that in the next season we’ll evolve as a team and we need you, as always, for the next two challenges."

Fans were quick to reassure him however that no explanation was needed. Instead they were eager to focus on the club's immediate and more distant future.

@davyseddon tweeted: "Don’t worry Bruno, we love you and we know we’ll improve and it’s fine if it takes a few years. I’m only 64, plenty of time."

@chriskelly1985 wrote: "No need to apologise Bruno son. Came up against a top side who are likely to be champions. Shows what need to get to if want to compete!"

@GibsonR1892 said: "Nice one Bruno keep the morale high! We aren’t on City’s level… yet!"

While @mygirlsmyworldx tweeted: "Hopefully against Arsenal under the lights at SJP it will be a different story."

Newcastle's next match will be at home to Arsenal on May 16. It will be broadcast on Sky Sports.
