Bruno Guimaraes expected to miss Brazil friendly through injury as Newcastle United woes continue

Newcastle United's injury woes continue to mount with Bruno Guimaraes expected to miss Brazil's friendly with Ghana on Friday. The midfielder is said to have picked up a thigh problem and while he may be fit enough to make the bench later this week, it is believed he won't be risked for the first of Selecao's two games during the international break.

Guimaraes trained with his national team-mates this week but reportedly needed special attention during a group session and is now being treated at the team hotel, according to reports in Brazil. National boss Tite is likely to use most of his squad in the next week and the 24-year-old may yet feature against Tunisia on Tuesday.

The player's representatives were staying tight-lipped on Thursday when asked about the injury but Brazil look set to keep the player in their international camp to recover which is a positive sign.

Guimaraes only managed 72 minutes for Newcastle on Saturday as he made his eagerly-awaited first-team comeback. Magpies boss Eddie Howe admitted he wanted to only give the midfielder an hour of game time but left him on the pitch slightly longer as his side pushed for a winner.

The north east outfit will be hopeful Guimaraes' problem isn't a serious one after a host of injuries to first-team players already this season. The former Lyon man missed three games in recent weeks, while Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin has also been sidelined.

Alexander Isak has also suffered an injury while on international duty and has returned home from Sweden's camp on Thursday. The 23-year-old was assessed and won't be able to play any part in his country's two upcoming Nations League ties.

Speaking to FourFourTwo this week, Guimaraes admitted he is loving life on Tyneside so far. “Sometimes I think to myself, ‘I was born for this, for the Premier League’. I already feel at home here," he told the magazine.

“The fans are crazy about me and nothing beats that in football. Honestly, I get so much love out on the streets that sometimes it feels like I’m the mayor of the city! They spot me and start yelling my name, wanting to take a picture. I’ve met people who’ve got a tattoo with my face on!"
