Bruno Guimaraes' brutal dig at Arsenal recalled as Newcastle star dents Gunners' top four hopes

Bruno Guimaraes scored a game-clinching goal against Arsenal on Monday night as Newcastle defeated the Gunners 2-0 at St James' Park.

With Mikel Arteta's side chasing the game to keep their top four hopes alive, they were caught out on the counter attack. Guimaraes popped up in the box to tap home a rebound into an empty net as the Brazilian secured all three points for the Magpies.

The goal has a significant impact on the race for Champions League football. Victory for Newcastle means that Chelsea's place in next season is now secure, whilst Arsenal now trail rivals Tottenham Hotspur by two points ahead of the final day. Spurs face already relegated Norwich City, whilst the Gunners host Everton, who are amidst their own battle at the bottom.

In rather ironic fashion, the Gunners were strongly linked to Guimaraes before he moved to the northeast. Edu and co had been looking to sign a new midfielder in January, Arthur Melo and Guimaraes on their shortlist.

Neither of the Brazilian duo ended up at the Emirates Stadium and, to make matters worse, Guimaraes aimed a cheeky dig at Arsenal upon his arrival on Tyneside.

On his Twitter @brunoog97, the 24-year-old's team posted a video compilation with the caption: "A beautiful chapter is coming." The caption alluded to the fact that the midfielder was happy to see the speculation come to an end, but the video referenced Arsenal's interest in signing him by clipping headlines from relevant articles about Edu's bid to sign him.

It was something that probably angered Arsenal fans back then. Now that his goal could've altered the club's fortunes moving forward, it's probably going to do the rounds on social media once more.
