Alan Shearer and Bruno Guimaraes showed their mutual respect on Twitter today in an exchange that shows how far the club has come in a short time.
Guimaraes was the man of the moment this afternoon, leading Newcastle United as they overcame a 1-0 deficit to Leicester City at St James’ Park. The Brazilian midfielder got the better of Kasper Schmeichel for the first goal, knocking it from between the goalkeeper’s legs.
It was Guimaraes’s second goal that really blew the roof of the stadium however, coming after five minutes of injury time thanks to a Joe Willock break down the wing. Willock managed to get the cross in and the Brazilian finished in style, heading the ball as he charged into the box.

It was a goal worthy of Alan Shearer at his peak, and it was no surprise that the former Newcastle number nine chipped in on Twitter. As well as a gloating message for his Match of the Day colleague and Leicester fan Gary Lineker, Shearer also sent a message to Bruno.
Shearer tweeted: “Brunooooooo you f……. beauty”
Shearer added the ellipses himself, but the message was clear. Soon after applauding the fans at St James’ Park, Bruno replied: “Boss you’re the best.”
It was just last September, not long before the takeover, that Shearer felt compelled to say on Match of the Day: “It's a hollow and an empty football club, there's no hope or ambition.”
There is certainly ambition at the club now. Bruno exemplifies it.
