Bruno Fernandes sums up controversial Man Utd win over Nottingham Forest in two words

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has reacted to the Red Devils’ FA Youth Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

United came out as 3-1 winners over the young Reds on Wednesday night. It was a game that was played in front of a massive record crowd of 67,000 at Old Trafford with almost 6,000 Forest fans travelling to show their support for Warren Joyce’s side.

The game didn’t come without controversy though as the game hinged on a penalty decision in the second half. Zach Abbott was adjudged to have fouled his man inside of the area with a penalty being awarded to the home side.

However, replays later showed that the foul clearly took place outside of the 18-yard box, meaning that it should have been a free-kick. The penalty put United 2-1 up, with the Red Devils adding a third before the full-time whistle.

As they celebrated their victory, Fernandes took to social media to give his reaction. Brilliant victory,” he wrote on Twitter. “Enjoy the moment.”

Speaking after the game, Joyce, who spent years at Old Trafford before Forest, spoke of his disappointment at the penalty decision. “Individual errors cost us,” he said.

“We’re disappointed with the second one, because clearly he’s two yards outside of the box, and it was a crucial stage of the game.

“Mistakes by our players, yes. But it’s not a penalty . In big games like this, it’s hard for the lads to take when they look back on that, at a time when the game could have gone either way. We’d had a couple of good chances at the other end, and were maybe unfortunate not to take the lead.

“It’s a poor mistake from us. You could say it’s a booking, or even a sending off. But it’s definitely not a penalty. In this day and age as well, when there’s all the technology available, I think it’s poor that in a final like this, it can scar lads for a long time.”
