Bruno Fernandes relishing ‘big chance’ to win first Manchester United trophy against Newcastle

Bruno Fernandes believes the Carabao Cup final will be “enjoyable” for neutral supporters as he eyes his first Manchester United trophy. While not comparable to Newcastle United’s, the Red Devils are also experiencing a trophy drought.

No silverware for six seasons is a rarity at Old Trafford but that figure does not compare to the 68-year barren spell Toon supporters have endured. Both clubs met in the 1999 FA Cup final when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side won 2-0 on their way to securing a historic treble.

Man United are now longer the feared side of old but are enjoying a renaissance under Erik ten Hag. While off-the-field problems still linger, the Dutchman has put his stamp on a side who have underperformed for years.

As it stands, Newcastle sit one above the Red Devils in the Premier League. However, bookmakers still make the Magpies slight underdogs (1/1), with Ten Hag’s side priced at 4/5.

Speaking to MUTV, Fernandes highlighted how both sides enjoying good form will benefit the Wembley spectacle. He said: "For us and Newcastle, it will be a big, big match, the chance to win a trophy, the first of the season.

“It's a big final with two of the teams who are playing really good football in the Premier League. Two teams that are in good form in the league and doing well.

"Newcastle have probably been a surprise from last season, for what they are doing this season, they have been amazing, so I think it will be a pretty good final and enjoyable to watch. I hope more for us than for them."
