Bruno Fernandes' fierce response to Jurgen Klopp complaints as pair clash again

Bruno Fernandes and Jurgen Klopp exchanged words at the end of Manchester United's 2-1 win against Liverpool on Monday, although it's not the first time they've clashed.

Klopp was spotted talking to Fernandes after the Old Trafford clash, with the Liverpool boss rejecting claims it was an animated chat. The Reds boss insisted he was simply complaining about time wasting to Fernandes, who was United's captain on Monday.

Klopp is no stranger to submitting a complaint, yet Fernandes is not scared to bite back. Speaking ahead of their Premier League clash at Anfield in January 2021, the Portuguese told his German rival to stop complaining about the amount of penalties United have won.

At the time, United had won 20 penalties since the start of the previous season - compared to Liverpool's 10. "You always see what people say, but I really don’t care," said Fernandes when asked about Klopp's complaint. "I’m not focused on what they're saying.

"We have really quick players up front. Anthony Martial is one of the best players one against one in the box, Marcus Rashford is another one who is quick and has quick feet, who can take the ball away from the defender at any moment.

"It’s normal that sometimes, because of that, they will be tripped and will fall and they gain penalties. People can talk and say what they want. But for me and the team, the main point is continuing to do the right things and when we get a penalty, just scoring."

It's easy to see why Klopp was frustrated on Monday. Liverpool were widely expected to win comfortably at Old Trafford but were denied thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, with Mohamed Salah responding for the visitors.

The result leaves Liverpool with just two points from their opening three Premier League games, five points behind Champions Manchester City and seven behind leaders Arsenal. Many are now questioning whether they are capable of challenging for the title.

United, meanwhile, were predicted to lose again after suffering humbling defeats to Brighton and Brentford in their opening two games, the latter being a 4-0 loss. Yet Erik ten Hag's side responded brilliantly to prove they may not be as bad as the critics believe.

Discussing his latest confrontation with Fernandes at full-time, Klopp insisted: "It was not animated it was the most harmless conversation I ever had with a player, who was obviously as emotional as I was.

"It was the situation with [Lisandro] Martinez, who went down under an 'awful' tackle that was obviously nothing. He [Fernandes] made a bit of it, he was talking to me and saying, 'you'd do the same'. But it was fine after, he told me he needs these kind of conversations. Okay, it’s fine, use me!"

Fernandes could captain United more often after club skipper Harry Maguire was left on the bench against Liverpool. Ten Hag played Martinez and Raphael Varane at the back, with the duo complementing each other well, leaving the England international's place in doubt.
