Bruno Fernandes and Fred enter Manchester United history books after Leeds goals

Bruno Fernandes and Fred entered the Manchester United history books on Sunday as they achieved a rare feat.

The pair were both on the scoresheet as United beat Leeds 4-2 at Elland Road to give their hopes of finishing in the Premier League’s top four another much-needed boost.

And it wasn’t the first time they managed to score against United’s old rivals this season either, with both Fernandes and Fred also on the scoresheet for the opening day 5-1 thrashing of Leeds at Old Trafford.

And the feat of scoring both home and away against their Yorkshire rivals puts them in esteemed company, with only five players having previously done the same.

The most recent player to have achieved it will be a familiar face to both Fernandes and Fred, with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having netted against Leeds home and away during the 2001/02 season.

Eric Cantona did the same as he haunted his old side in the 1996/97 campaign, scoring in a 4-0 win at Elland Road before going on to convert from the penalty spot at Old Trafford.

You have to go much further back to find the other three players who managed the feat, with David Herd scoring in successive 1-1 draws with Leeds during the 1965/66 season.

United legend Sir Bobby Charlton is the only player to have achieved the feat twice, having scored home and away against Leeds in both the 1956/57 season and the 1959/60 campaign.

In between, Dennis Viollet managed to score in a 5-0 win at Old Trafford during the 1957/58 season before going on to bag a goal in the 1-1 draw later in the season at Elland Road – the final Roses clash before the Munich air disaster.
