Browns likely wouldn’t swap QBs with Panthers in trade involving Baker Mayfield

Things have gotten messy for the Cleveland Browns at the quarterback position, and that’s even if you exclude the mounting allegations of sexual misconduct against Deshaun Watson. But when it comes solely to Baker Mayfield, can they make a clean break?

According to Mary Kay Cabot, probably not.

A scenario that could make plenty of sense for both the Browns and the Carolina Panthers is a quarterback-for-quarterback swap—specifically Mayfield for Sam Darnold. Both have just about worn out their welcomes,  both are set to earn $18.8 million for the 2022 campaign and both teams would be better off with the other guy.

Cabot’s report for Cleveland.com, however, isn’t putting much stock into that outcome. On Wednesday evening, the Browns beat writer quoted a league source that stated he’s “confident it’s not happening.”

Shucks.

What could be happening, though, is a trade that sends another Panthers player to Cleveland. And, ironically enough, it could be receiver Robbie Anderson.

In a separate nugget, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports mentioned on Tuesday that the 29-year-old wideout could be involved in a move for Mayfield. Hmmm . . .

Anderson, of course, previously expressed his disapproval for a pairing with the former No. 1 overall pick in a couple of Instagram replies back in April. And although he cleared that up on Wednesday, saying he was just showing support for his current quarterback in Darnold, he wouldn’t have to play with him anyway if such a deal went down.
