The Cleveland Browns continue their efficient offseason, this time landing a true free safety in NFL free agency. Bringing over the two-time Super Bowl-winning defensive back Juan Thornhill on a three-year deal, the Browns have effectively replaced John Johnson III after releasing him as a post-June 1 cut. The Browns signed Thornhill to a deal worth $7 million annually, with the first two seasons fully guaranteed.
Thornhill was known coming out of college for being one of the most athletic safeties of all time, leaping to a 44-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-9 broad jump at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. He then ran a 4.42 40-yard dash and posted good agilities as well, finishing with a Relative Athletic Score of 9.75.
With a true post safety over the top now, some pressure will be taken off of the cornerbacks, knowing they have help deep.
