Browns hire new TE coach after promoting Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator

The Cleveland Browns promoted their old tight ends coach Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator and hired Christian Jones to replace him.

Jones, who interviewed for the job of Cleveland’s quarterbacks coach before the team internally promoted Bill Musgrave, has a previous history with head coach Kevin Stefanski. Jones and Stefanski overlapped with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 where he served as an offensive quality coach.

Most recently, Jones served as the assistant quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants for the last two seasons. Historically, the Browns have always hired a quarterback-centric coach to coach the tight ends. With a typical room of just four players, the tight ends coaches have also spent time with the quarterbacks under Stefanski.

This was the case with Rees, TC McCartney before him (who went on to coach quarterbacks in 2024 under former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt), and Drew Petzing (now the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator) before him.

Expect Jones to influence with both the tight ends and quarterbacks.
