Browns hire Jacques Cesaire as DL coach

The Cleveland Browns made another coaching staff change this offseason. The team reportedly hired ex-Houston Texans defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire for the same role in Cleveland, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

While Cesaire will take over the role previously held by Ben Bloom, multiple reports indicate Bloom could remain with the team in a different role. Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot believes Bloom could shift into a run game coordinator position – a role he held two from 2021-2022.

Cesaire spent the past two seasons with the Texans for Lovie Smith and then DeMeco Ryans. But his contract was reportedly not renewed after the 2023 season, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.

The Texans had a solid defensive line in 2023 both on the interior and on the edges. Will Anderson Jr. and Jonathan Greenard combined for 19.5 sacks, while defensive tackles Sheldon Rankins and Maliek Collins tallied 11 sacks between the two of them.

He was also the assistant defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills from 2020 to 2021 and the defensive line coach at the University of San Diego from 2015 to 2019. Cesaire is a former NFL defensive lineman as well who spent nine seasons with the then-San Diego Chargers from 2003 to 2011. He tallied 12.5 career sacks and 220 combined tackles.

The Browns have several other big staff openings left to fill this offseason, including offensive coordinator. Cleveland recently hired Duce Staley to coach the running backs.
