Browns’ Goodwin To Miss Start of Training Camp Due to Blood Clots

The Browns announced Friday receiver Marquise Goodwin will miss the start of training camp as the 10th-year veteran addresses a significant medical issue.

Cleveland placed Goodwin, who signed with the club in April, on the non-football illness list after he was diagnosed earlier this offseason with blood clots in his legs and lungs.

Goodwin shared that he learned of his condition after he began experiencing discomfort in his legs and slight shortness of breath during organized team activities in the spring. The 32-year-old wideout also spoke on his reaction to the news and his approach as he continues treatment.

“It was really alarming at first because I’ve experienced injury throughout my career, but it’s never been anything like this that could turn into something detrimental if it’s not taken care of,” Goodwin said. “It was frightening at first, but now I’m at ease with it. I’ve prayed and just given it over to God. It’s out of my control, and the only thing I can control is my effort and attitude and how I approach each day moving forward.”

As Goodwin noted, the 2013 third-round pick has endured a number of injuries in his nine seasons (he opted out of the ’20 season during COVID-19), including a shoulder injury that ended his lone season with the Seahawks in ’22 after 13 games.

With his return timeline still to be determined, Goodwin intends to stay around the team and continue preparing for a potential role in Cleveland on the sidelines.

“It’s really an unfortunate deal we have to deal with, but we need to deal with it in the proper fashion,” Goodwin said. “The Browns are doing everything in their power to support me through it by allowing me to be around the team, on the field and in meetings.

“I’m grateful for that, and hopefully this thing gets back under control and I can feel my body and what I need to feel so I can help this team make this run.”

For his career, Goodwin has amassed 187 receptions for 3,023 yards and 18 touchdowns in 102 career games with the Bills, 49ers, Bears and Seahawks.
