Brondby fans riot ahead of Rangers clash as police defend drawing guns on supporters

Danish police have defended drawing guns on Brondby fans as the Copenhagen derby descended into chaos.

A weekend clash with FC Copenhagen was marred by shocking clashes between supporters and cops outside the Brondby Stadium.

Rangers travel to Denmark next week for a Europa League clash and have been allocated 1,400 tickets for the fixture.

Brondby fans were involved in ugly scenes during their visit to Ibrox as they attempted to storm the home section and a pitch-side photographer was injured by a missile.

There was further controversy involving their supporters at the weekend and Danish authorities have revealed they are investigating a total of 61 acts of violence against the police.

And they've said the trouble got so out of hand that an officer pointed a loaded gun at a fan "for his own safety" after a large group attempted to attack Copenhagen's team bus.

Copenhagen's Vestegns Police Deputy Inspector Soren Enemark said: "It was clear to us that there was a very great will to try and incite violence and despite the fact there was a huge police presence, there was large number of people who tried to attack the opposite fan group.

"Before the match, one fan group tried to reach the opponents. We intervened and the episode was stopped with the use of, among other things, police dogs. To separate the violent fans, the police had to use tear gas several times both before and after the match.

"At one point, a large group of fans made outbursts against the police officers who were guarding the bus transporting the visiting players. For his own safety, a police officer had to draw his pistol. No shots were fired, however.

"The behaviour we witnessed is completely unacceptable. Fortunately, no one was injured in connection with that episode

"I think it has clearly gone the wrong way after the Covid break. I do not remember us ever setting up 61 cases of violence against the police plus one case of violence against an inspector."

Brondby have condemned the violence, which took place outside their own stadium.

Spokesman Christian Schultz said: "It's completely wrong that the situation escalated.

"We got the information that the police provide and they are in the process of handling. We are not involved as such, but what the police tell us, we are of course shocked to hear."

Rangers face Brondby next Thursday in the Danes' 29,000-capacity stadium.

Steven Gerrard 's side secured a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture via goals from Leon Balogun and Kemar Roofe.
