Denver Broncos undrafted rookie receiver Brandon Johnson left Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings and did not return after suffering an ankle injury in the first half.
After the game, Johnson told reporters that he suffered a high ankle sprain. The recovery timeline for that kind of injury can vary, but it’s possible that the receiver could be sidelined for up to 6-8 weeks.
The injury put an end to an impressive summer for Johnson.
“He’s done a good job,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said of Johnson after the game. “He’s learning the system. He’s been able to make plays, done some things in practice. He’s done some things in games.
“It was unfortunate that that [injury] happened. So, we’ll have to evaluate both. The injury that he had and see where he fits.”
Johnson would be eligible to return from injured reserve after four games if he makes the initial 53-man roster, but players who go on IR before the initial roster is set cannot return during the season. So the team might consider putting Johnson on the initial 53-man roster and then move him to IR the next day.
