The Denver Broncos will start rookie quarterback Bo Nix in their next preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 18.
Nix impressed in his NFL debut against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but Denver’s starting lineup for next week was pre-planned.
When Broncos coach Sean Payton announced last Friday that Jarrett Stidham would start against the Colts, he also announced that Nix would start against the Packers the following week.
Nix completed 15 of his 21 passing attempts for 125 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions against Indianapolis. He also rushed three times for 17 yards.
Nix got some reps with Denver’s first-team offense, but he appeared to be facing Colts backups on defense. The Broncos might face a similar scenario against Green Bay. After beating the Cleveland Browns 23-10 in their preseason opener, Packers coach Matt LaFleur said most starters won’t play in Denver in Week 2 of preseason.
It would have been ideal for the Broncos to see Nix get live-game reps against Green Bay’s starting defense. Fortunately, the Packers will feature their defensive starters in a scrimmage-like joint practice with Denver on Friday.
Based on LaFleur’s comments, it sounds like Nix will face a second-string defense in his first (preseason) start in the NFL next week.
