Broncos will get compensatory draft picks if they lose Vance Joseph in 2025

The Denver Broncos might lose their defensive coordinator this offseason, but such a scenario would increase the team’s draft capital.

Broncos coordinator Vance Joseph is a candidate for at least two of the NFL’s six head coach openings in 2025. The Chicago Bears and New York Jets have both shown interest in Joseph, with the Jets officially requesting an interview.

If Joseph ends up landing a head coach job with an NFL team, Denver would receive a third-round compensatory draft pick in 2025 and another third-round pick in 2026 as part of the NFL’s Rooney Rule that rewards teams for developing minority coaches and executives.

To be eligible for the comp picks, a team must employ a coach/executive for at least two consecutive seasons, and this is Joseph’s second year as a coordinator in Denver.

Broncos senior personnel executive David Shaw, who has drawn head coach interest from the Bears, has only spent one season in Denver, so the team would not receive comp picks if Shaw joins another club this offseason.
