The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms on a contract with quarterback Ben DiNucci, according to a tweet from his agent, Joe Linta.
DiNucci, 26, spent time with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020-2021 before starring in the XFL this spring. Playing for the Seattle Sea Dragons, DiNucci led the XFL in passing yards (2,671) and ranked second in touchdown passes (20) this year. He also led the league in interceptions (13).
DiNucci was roasted by Broncos coach Sean Payton during rookie minicamp after he threw an interception in front of team owner/CEO Greg Penner on Saturday. Payton told the QB he could work for one of Penner’s Walmart stores if his football career doesn’t work out.
It was clearly a good-natured rib from Payton, who liked what he saw from DiNucci enough over the weekend to sign him.
DiNucci will have to pass a physical examination on Monday before the signing becomes official. The Broncos will have to also make a corresponding move to make room for the QB on the 90-man offseason roster.
DiNucci’s signing might be bad news for current third-string quarterback Jarrett Guarantano. Unless the team plans to bring four QBs to training camp, Guarantano would be the odd man out. Russell Wilson and Jarrett Stidham will serve as Denver’s top two quarterbacks in 2023.
