Broncos signing Frank Clark removes possibility of Danielle Hunter trade

Story update: This post was scheduled before the Broncos signed Frank Clark. The headline has been revised. See our original post below.

The Denver Broncos could use more depth on the edge and a former George Paton pass rusher might be available on the trade block.

The Minnesota Vikings have been receiving trade calls about Danielle Hunter, according to various reports. Hunter is entering the final year of his contract and the Vikings seem to be willing to trade him now instead of paying him or letting him walk as a free agent in 2024.

Broncos general manager George Paton was serving as Minnesota’s assistant general manager and vice president of player personnel when the Vikings used a third-round pick to draft Hunter in 2015.

Hunter is familiar with the team’s front office and he would undoubtedly improve Denver’s defense, but it’s hard to imagine the Broncos trading for him and then giving him a contract extension.

Denver is set to have seven picks in 2024 (including a first-round selection), but after trading early picks for quarterback Russell Wilson and coach Sean Payton in back-to-back offseasons, the Broncos might be hesitant to give up what Minnesota is seeking for Hunter.

And even if Denver was willing to trade draft capital for Hunter, the Broncos might not be able to afford the kind of contract a top pass rusher would command in today’s market.

Another former Paton draft pick, however, might be more affordable.
