The Denver Broncos haven’t gotten much love from offseason NFL power rankings, but ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) gives the team a slightly more positive outlook for the 2023 season.
Denver has an FPI rating of 0.9, which ranks 13th in the NFL. The team’s defense (2.3) did a lot of heavy lifting for that grade while the offense (-1.2) and special teams (-0.2) are understandably graded poorly.
FBI is “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season,” according to ESPN’s website.
“FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.”
Elsewhere in the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs are ranked No. 1 (6.4), followed by the Los Angles Chargers at No. 7 (3.0). The Las Vegas Raiders are ranked No. 20 (-0.6).
ESPN’s FPI ratings have the Broncos as the third-best team in the division, which feels about right. Denver might make a big turnaround under coach Sean Payton, but until the team proves it on the field, power rankings and FPI indexes will be nothing more than offseason talking points.
