The Sean Payton-to-Denver speculation continues to heat up.
If Payton leaves Fox to return to the NFL in 2023, the Broncos appear to be his most likely landing spot.
Denver quarterback Russell Wilson has made it known that he would be in favor of such a scenario, and he has already spoken with the coach.
“Russell Wilson has contacted Sean — legally, by the way, through channels — he wants Sean Payton,” Colin Cowherd said on The Herd on Thursday. “He needs fixing. He knows he needs fixing.”
Payton spoke about how he would go about “fixing” Wilson in an interview with Cowherd last fall. Payton, who currently works as an analyst for Fox, was speaking hypothetically from a coach’s perspective, but that hypothetical scenario might become a reality.
The Broncos are believed to be the front-runner to hire Payton this offseason, and Wilson would likely benefit from such an addition.
“I’ve been around Sean, obviously at the Pro Bowl,” Wilson said when asked about the coach after Denver’s season finale on Jan. 8. “I’ve been around him across the league and I’ve played against them quite a bit.
“He’s one of the world’s best, obviously, a guy who has coached a Hall of Fame quarterback in Drew Brees … [h]e’s competitive as can be, he’s a winner and obviously won a Super Bowl … he knows how to push guys at the ultimate level.”
In order to sign Payton, the Broncos would have to complete a trade with the New Orleans Saints. Denver is expecte to begin second-round head coach interviews next week, and Payton will be the name to watch.
