With no first- or second-round draft picks and just five picks overall this year, the Denver Broncos might consider moving down in a trade to acquire more picks during the NFL draft later this month.
The Broncos do own a pair of picks early in the third round (Nos. 67 and 68 overall), and general manager George Paton was asked at the NFL owners’ meetings in Arizona last week if he might attempt to move higher up the draft board.
“It’s hard to move up when you only have five picks,” Paton said last week. “We won’t rule anything out, but it’s hard. I would say we’d be more inclined to move back, to get some more picks. So, we’ll see how it goes.”
Denver could, hypothetically, use one third-round pick and trade down from the other pick to acquire another mid-round pick this year while adding an additional pick either for 2023 or 2024.
Paton has been very active with draft trades in the past, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the Broncos make a move or two during the draft. Fans should keep in mind that — as the GM noted — moving down will be easier than moving up.
The 2023 NFL draft will be held in Kansas City from April 27-29.
