The Denver Broncos’ crowded quarterback room has a chance to grow even bigger next month.
The Broncos have invited Colorado School of Mines quarterback John Matocha to try out at rookie minicamp in May, the college announced on its Twitter/X page. Denver attended the QB’s pro day last month.
Matocha (5-11, 180 pounds) set the NCAA’s all-time record (at any level) with 162 passing touchdowns in four seasons with the Orediggers, a Division II program. The Division I record is held by Case Keenum (155 TDs).
Matoacho completed 70% of his passes for 15,006 yards at Mines while also rushing for 1,982 yards and 28 touchdowns on the ground, giving him 190 total touchdowns.
Last year, the Broncos signed the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher, Jaleel McLaughlin, as a free agent and he went on to make the 53-man roster.
If signed, Matocha will join a quarterback room that includes first-round draft pick Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham, Zach Wilson and Ben DiNucci. Denver typically does not carry more than four quarterbacks on the offseason roster.
