Broncos hope to interview DC Ejiro Evero for HC role

After firing former head coach Nathaniel Hackett, the first coach the Denver Broncos offered the interim role to was defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

Evero turned down the chance to coach on an interim basis for the final two weeks of the season, but he might be a candidate for the full-time job in 2023.

“We hope to interview Ejiro Evero for the position,” general manager George Paton said Tuesday.

Evero turned down the interim role in part because of his relationship with Hackett. Denver then gave the interim gig to senior advisor Jerry Rosburg.

“I’ve been so impressed by our defense,” Rosburg said during his introductory press conference on Wednesday. “Our defense plays with fundamentals. They’re disciplined. You can see there is a team orientation in our defense and how we fit with one another. I’ve been so impressed by him and his staff and how they have operated. After talking with George [Paton], I talked with Ejiro.

“I told him how I respected his decision because of his loyalty and relationship with Nathaniel. My feeling is if that had happened to me with another close friend of mine in my career, I hope I would have done the same thing, but it’s not an easy thing to do. I think he should be recognized for the magnanimous act that he did. Frankly, there are a lot of people who want to be standing up here. He’s highly qualified and he deserved the opportunity to say, ‘Yes.’ He chose to say, ‘No,’ so that’s why I’m standing before you.”

Evero will get another chance to say “Yes” — at least to an interview — at the end of the season. We’ll find out at the end of the season if he wants to.
