Little brother Klese Haas could accuse Payne of blinking first after their slated NRL trial match-up on Saturday was scuppered by the Brisbane star's late scratching.
Broncos forward Haas and experienced front row recruit Ryan James have both been ruled out of the CBus Super Stadium clash with "soreness".
A back-rower or centre, Klese Haas is on the Titans' books until the end of next year as he looks to secure a development contract and first grade debut.
Denied a family affair on the Gold Coast, Klese will still push his case against a Brisbane side captained by Kurt Capewell in his club debut.
Fellow Brisbane recruit Corey Jensen will move from the bench to partner Tom Flegler while Logan Bayliss will replace James on the interchange.
New Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui (knee) will miss the game, but his younger brother Iszac will also feature alongside Titans star David Fifita's younger brother Jojo.
"He's an unbelievable trainer, exactly like Tino in that regard, but he hasn't played a lot of rugby league ... he told me he's played 10 games in the last four years," Gold Coast coach Justin Holbrook said.
"It's going to be a slow development phase, I don't want anyone to expect another Tino running out."
Brenko Lee and Billy Walters will also play for Brisbane, while Pat Carrigan returns from last year's ACL tear for the Broncos.
