Brisbane have extended the contract of coach Kevin Walters until the end of the 2023 NRL season, saying the continuity and stability will allow then to keep improving.
A six-time premiership winner as a player, Walters was appointed Broncos coach at the end of 2020 and claimed seven wins in the 2021 season as Brisbane finished 14th.
The former Queensland State of Origin coach's deal was set to expire at the end of this year but Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy said the extended deal would aid the club's rebuild following their 2020 wooden spoon campaign.
"It's been well documented that we initiated a reset during last season and made a range of changes which resulted in better performances," Donaghy said.
"As head coach, Kevin has played a key role in that change process.
"Providing continuity over the coming two seasons by extending Kevin to the end of 2023 will give our entire football program the stability they need to keep improving and growing as a team and as a club."
The news comes a week out from Brisbane's NRL season opener against South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium.
"I've been very public in stating that I want to coach the Broncos to a premiership and that hasn't changed," Walters said.
"This contract extension provides that bit more certainty moving forward."
