Broncos coach Sean Payton says running the ball is in his DNA

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton will face the task of turning quarterback Russell Wilson’s career around this fall.

One way to help accomplish that goal would be to install a dominant rushing attack that takes some pressure off of Wilson and gives the offense balance. Payton and his staff have placed an emphasis on running the ball dating back to his time with the Saints.

“I think it has to be part of our DNA, and we felt that way in New Orleans, as well,” Payton said on July 29. “I think the two greatest allies for good quarterback play are a running game and good defense. I think it’s a tough position to play if you’re not running the ball well, and then obviously it becomes tougher if you’re not stopping anyone.

“That’s going to be important to what we do as long as I’m here. I just think it’s that important to winning in our league.”

It’s been said that actions speak louder than words and Payton has backed up his words with action this offseason. Denver signed a running back, a fullback, a blocking tight end and two big-name offensive linemen. Clearly, the coach wants to be prepared to run early and often in 2023.
