Following their 24-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the Denver Broncos do not plan to be sellers ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.
“We’re not openly or even remotely shopping anyone,” Payton said during a conference call with reporters on Monday morning.
Denver’s coach admitted that teams have called the Broncos, but he implied that Denver has not been initiating any trade talks. That doesn’t mean the Broncos definitely won’t make any moves in the next 24 hours, but if Payton is to be believed, Denver isn’t itching to ship anyone out.
Payton’s comments on Monday were similar to his remarks made after Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.
“[W]e’re not the team looking to go out and buy,” Payton said Sunday. “We can’t control the buyers that call. We always pick the phone up — you have to professionally, but that’s it. This doesn’t — we have a plan on where we see ourselves, and that’s an honest answer. When I see or hear things, I chuckle because I’m thinking, ‘Well I haven’t talked to anyone about that,’ and if I haven’t, then it’s probably not true.”
There have been reports that Denver has received interest in wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, but there’s been no action on that front so far. We’ll see if that changes before Tuesday’s deadline at 2:00 p.m. MT.
