Bromley FC to hire video game player as full-time tactician

National League side Bromley are hiring a ‘Football Manager’ video game player as a full-time tactician.

As part of a competition launched on Tuesday, the League Two hopefuls will offer a full-time role as a ‘Support Performance Tactician’ to the winner.

‘The Everyday Tactician’ — a competition run by Xbox and Football Manager — has been set up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Football Manager game, made by Sports Interactive.

The role would see the winner work closely with Bromley’s coaching staff, including manager Andy Woodman and first-team coach Alan Dunne, to provide both tactical suggestions and learn on the job.

Woodman himself said: “At Bromley FC, we pride ourselves on being a community club, so we're very much looking forward to welcoming an enthusiastic supporter to our backroom staff. There are definitely plenty out there who know how to guide us to glory in the Football Manager game, so we're excited to welcome someone who can replicate that in the real world.”

Miles Jacobson, Sports Interactive’s studio director, said: “Football fans are full of opinions on how their team can do better on the pitch – now with the help of Xbox and Bromley F.C. we can finally find out if their theories are right and follow the journey of 'The Everyday Tactician’. I expect there might be a bit more to it than even we at Football Manager anticipate.”

Hopeful Tacticians must complete the Xbox achievement ‘Championes’ in FM24 on PC with PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate, and on console with Game Pass for Console or Game Pass Ultimate — leading a team of their choosing to a domestic league title.

After reaching this achievement, applicants must fill out the form at www.xbox.com/The-Everyday-Tactician, before sending a minute-long video explaining why they should win. Finalists will be interviewed by Bromley FC.

James Butcher, Xbox Northern Europe Director, said about the initiative: “We are excited to give a Football Manager gamer a unique insight into professional football management. Xbox Game Pass is home to some of the best sports content, and this first-of-its-kind job application is giving a member of the Xbox community the chance to live out their dream.”

A three-part documentary, to air on TNT Sports in 2024, is set to follow the winner’s exploits in their new role.
