Broken glass and litter strewn across Glasgow’s Trongate after Celtic fans’ title party celebration

Video footage has captured the shocking aftermath of Celtic fans partying in Glasgow’s Trongate after reclaiming the Scottish Premiership title.

Thousands of supporters filled the streets while flying flags, letting off pyros and singing songs following the Parkhead side’s 6-0 victory over Motherwell on Saturday afternoon.

Police urged motorists to avoid the area around the city’s George Square as party-goers, who celebrated on bus stops and traffic lights, began to arrive at around 4pm.

And the nearby Trongate Theatre was forced to cancel their 7.45pm performance of Who Killed My Father at the last minute due to “circumstances out-with our control”.

Dozens of videos and images have now appeared on social media showing mountains of rubbish strewn across the street.

Broken glass, drink containers and food wrappers poured out of overflowing bins sparking a major clean up mission.

Glasgow City Council praised their cleaners who managed to clear the majority of the debris by Sunday morning.

A spokeswoman said: "Our cleansing staff were prepared in advance to start the clear up as soon as fans started to disperse from the Merchant City.

"Our nightshift were in place from 10pm onwards and another team is back in the area this morning to make sure things are back to normal.”

She added said: "Repairs were made to the traffic lights as quickly as possible but it is totally unacceptable for people to think it is ok to cause damage to key infrastructure in the city."

Labour MSP Paul Sweeney later tweeted: “Disappointing to hear reports that Celtic fans gathered at Glasgow Cross have broken into the 1930 Mercat Cross building by Edith Burnet Hughes.

“I hope @GreaterGlasgPol secure this historic building and that no damage has occurred beyond forcing its door.”

Police Scotland have confirmed that six people were arrested for “minor disorder” and said that the level of anti-social behaviour and littering were of an “unacceptable level”.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow Division, said: "Police Scotland is a human rights-based organisation that puts our values of integrity, fairness, respect and a commitment to upholding human rights at the heart of everything we do.

“This afternoon thousands of Celtic supporters gathered in the area of Glasgow Cross to celebrate their team’s achievement.

“A proportionate policing plan was in place which facilitated the gathering, prioritised public safety and sought to minimise disruption to businesses and communities.

“While there was an unacceptable level of anti-social behaviour and littering there were no serious incidents or disorder.

"There were some outbreaks of minor disorder and our officers acted swiftly and robustly to prevent escalation and protect safety.

“Over the course of the evening there were six arrests for offences including assault and acts of public disorder.

“A further four people were issued with fixed penalty notices."
