A broken down train is causing disruption to rail services in the North East this evening, with passengers being warned of delays and cancellations.
The westbound line running towards Carlisle is currently blocked due to a broken down Northern train between at Metrocentre. This is due to the 17:55 Nunthorpe to Carlisle being at a standstill at the Metrocentre after experiencing "engine issues".
The rail provider confirmed that a number of services have been cancelled and passengers should expect delays in the region this evening. The driver is said to be liaising with maintenance to fix the problem.

Northern tweeted: "Due to a broken down train at Metrocentre the line towards Carlisle is blocked. Train services running through this station will be cancelled or delayed."
Information on the Northern Rail website states that the following routes will be affected while the driver is conducting their investigations into the cause of the issues with the train:
Morpeth to Metrocentre
Nunthorpe to Carlisle
Newcastle to Metrocentre
