Most of the draft process focuses on players team should be all over. Players that a team should sprint to the podium with the card if he is still on the board when they are on the clock.
But there’s also times where some folks look at players that absolutely would not fit a team and they should absolutely pass on them if they’re still on the board.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay recently named one prospect each team should avoid in this upcoming draft and his pick for the Jets is a rather interesting one: Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones.
Jones has been a very popular choice across the world of mock drafts for the Jets at No. 13 and for good reason. The Jets need offensive tackle help and Jones showed to be one of the most athletic tackles in this class after posting the fastest 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine.
So why should the Jets avoid Jones? Here’s what Kay had to say:
“The New York Jets were a quarterback away from being one of the most dangerous teams in the league last year. They orchestrated a complete defensive turnaround, going from one of the NFL’s worst defenses in 2021 to one of the top units in 2022.
With the defense pretty much set and Aaron Rodgers potentially solving their quarterback woes, the Jets can now build up their offensive line with the No. 13 overall pick. The team needs insurance for an injury-ravaged Mekhi Becton and an aging Duane Brown at the offensive tackle spot, a position that most experts have the Jets addressing in Round 1.
Broderick Jones is an option the front office will surely mull over, but New York may want to pass on the Georgia tackle despite his extremely high ceiling and physical capabilities. He’s still rather raw when it comes to technique and has shown some concerning lapses on tape.
Given Gang Green is going to be in win-now mode, a more versatile talent with plug-and-play potential at several spots in the offensive trenches—Northwestern’s Peter Skoronski is the perfect example of this—would be the better choice if available.”
The Jets would have a decision to make if they take a tackle in round one, whether to start that rookie versus either Mekhi Becton or Max Mitchell at right tackle. Regardless, if Jones is available when the Jets are on the clock, he’ll be heavily considered for the pick.
