In most NFL locker rooms, the star quarterback gifts his teammates expensive gifts around the holidays, thanking them for their contributions this season.
That’s not the case in the Bay Area, however.
San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey was the one who splurged on teammates, giving them a new PXG golf bag, a coupon for a custom golf club fitting and a bottle of tequila.
Brock Purdy, the man once known as Mr. Irrelevant who is now the 49ers’ long-term answer under center, was relieved to find out he was on McCaffrey’s nice list.
“Financially I wouldn’t be able to cover that right now,” Purdy jokingly told reporters Friday, per The Athletic’s David Lombardi. “Shoutout to him, everyone loved it. Thank you, Christian.”

Much has been made of Purdy’s finances. Playing at an MVP level on a seventh-round draft pick’s rookie contract, Purdy is making $870,000 this season. He famously lives with a roommate, offensive lineman Nick Zakelj, in a Bay Area apartment and still drives his trusty Toyota Sequoia SUV.
McCaffrey, however, knows Purdy’s bag is coming in the near future.
“He’s doing as much as he can with what he’s got,” McCaffrey told reporters Friday. “But eventually he’ll be just fine at providing the gifts.”
