San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw a career-high four interceptions in Monday night’s 33–19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens - an extremely poor performance for a quarterback who has not had many through his first 23 starts.
Purdy made no excuses in the postgame press conference, as he felt like he let the team down with his play against one of the best groups in football on Monday night.
“Our team came ready to play,” Purdy said. “And for me to make some decisions like that…it’s not fair to these guys. I have to realize that and understand that, and I have to get better for my team.”
But for Purdy, it’s all about the big picture and what the team is trying to accomplish. Entering Monday night, it appeared that the 49ers were the odds-on favorite in the NFC to make it to the Super Bowl. While that is still certainly the case even after a tough loss to one of the AFC’s top teams, Purdy has his eyes on what’s next following the worst stat line of his career.
“I got to ask myself, ‘Alright, who are you? What do you stand for? Who are you when things are good? Who are you when things don’t go your way?’” Purdy added. “It’s easy to be riding high and thinking you’re the man when things are going well, winning games and all that kind of stuff. And you don’t really see a whole lot of adversity in some games and whatnot, and this is the reality of the NFL.
“I obviously have to look myself in the mirror, watch the plays ready to get better, make some cleaner decisions, help my team put up points and score and protect the ball. And when things don’t go my way, it’s understanding I can’t be acting out. I have to be real with myself and be better, but I want to be the same guy every day.”
Purdy and the 49ers will be back in action on Sunday in Washington as they take on the Commanders, looking to get back in the win column and stay the course to try to earn the NFC’s top seed.
