Brock Purdy day-to-day after leaving Week 3 with back soreness

There aren’t many good ways to paint the San Francisco 49ers’ 27-24 defeat against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

To make matters worse, quarterback Brock Purdy was banged up during the game and suffered back soreness according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Purdy is considered day-to-day after his MRI came back clean. Shanahan said he’s hopeful Purdy will be able to practice Wednesday.

It’s not a huge surprise Purdy was a little sore after the contest. He ran it 10 times for 41 yards and threw 30 passes in the game. Back ailments are always alarming though so it makes sense they took the precaution of getting an MRI.

In a season that so far has been defined by their injury problems, losing Purdy for any amount of time would be a potential knockout blow. Especially on the heels of the news that defensive tackle Javon Hargrave will likely miss the rest of the year with a partially torn triceps.

San Francisco has already struggled at times to overcome injuries on offense. If they didn’t have Purdy it would be hard to paint a path to victory in any game that he missed, particularly given that running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are already out.

We’ll keep a close eye on this throughout the week. The 49ers have a day off Tuesday before beginning Week 4 preparations Wednesday. That Wednesday practice will come with a participation report which will give us a better indication of what direction Purdy is trending.
