Brock Purdy’s unlikely run as the 49ers’ starting quarterback could culminate in a pair of broken records in the team’s season finale against the Cardinals.
Last week Purdy had a chance to break the franchise record for touchdown passes by a rookie. The record belongs to Tom Owen, who tossed 10 TDs in his 1974 rookie campaign. Purdy with his pair of TD passes against the Raiders tied Owen. He’ll need just one vs. Arizona to break the record. Purdy has two TD passes in every game since he took over for Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13.
The other record could be perhaps more impressive. Purdy has four wins as a starter, which also tied Owen for most wins ever by a rookie QB. We can even change the verbiage to “first-year QB,” which accounts for players like Nick Mullens who were technically beyond their rookie years when they became starters, and he’d still be atop the list.
A fifth win would not only set a franchise rookie record, but he’d become the first 49ers rookie since Scott Bull in 1976 to go undefeated for a season in multiple starts. Bull went 2-0 during his rookie season.
There are myriad ways Purdy’s success as the final pick in the draft will go down in history, but he could set some 49ers rookie QB records that aren’t touched for a long time.
