The musical Hadestown has sunk so far into the underworld, it has finally arrived Down Under.

The eight-time Tony Award-winning show, a retelling of the ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, opens in Sydney on Friday.

While it might not be as well-known as Hamilton, the long-running West End and Broadway show is heading towards 2000 performances at New York's Walter Kerr Theatre.

The show's pre-sale broke box office records at Sydney's Theatre Royal when tickets were released in 2024.

The production stars Christine Anu as Hermes, Abigail Adriano as Eurydice, Noah Mullins as Orpheus, Elenoa Rokobaro as Persephone, and Adrian Tamburini as Hades.

The musical, which blends American folk with New Orleans-style jazz, began as a small-time theatre project for musician and playwright Anais Mitchell, developed with director Rachel Chavkin.

The production is backed by JONES Theatrical Group and Opera Australia, marking another foray into musical theatre by the national opera company.
